A pandemic, which shall remain nameless, is making it increasingly difficult to show up daily at work.
What is the benefit? The benefit?
You can achieve your dream of working on a laptop while lying on a beach in a tropical country.
Rise of digital nomad visa
Many countries, particularly those that can profit from extra revenue, have started offering a Digital Nomad Visa. This Visa allows a remote worker to stay temporarily in another country. With a digital visa, you cannot engage in any business in the country where you are living. If you meet specific requirements, it’s possible to renew your Visa.
Portugal is one of many countries that offer a digital nomad Visa. Georgia, Croatia, and Iceland are also European countries that provide digital nomad visas. Other countries that offer digital nomad visas include Grenada, Panama, Dubai, Sri Lanka, and more.
The visas can be called “digital nomad” or other similar names.
Self-employed ex-pats
This is where I fall. I run a remote content-writing and expat-coaching business and live in Italy. I am in Italy on a visa for self-employment.
The main difference between a digital nomad visa, which is currently out of Italy (though legislation has been approved), and a self-employment visa is that if you want to do business in your new country, you need to get a visa.
Self-employed ex-pats are more likely to plan to settle in their new country rather than move from one digital nomad-friendly country to another. With the self-employed Visa, you do not have to work online. However, in many countries, it is better to make money in your own country. This is because, in other countries, finding a job can be challenging due to language barriers, job availability, and qualifications.
There are more differences between the two
A digital nomad does not necessarily have to be self-employed. You can become a digital employee nomad if your employer allows you to work abroad.
Self-employed ex-pats must register their businesses in their new country. It may be necessary to obtain a business identification number (in Italy, it is called a Partita IVA) to file their taxes and report income in both their home country and the local one. (My advice? (My advice: Find an accountant immediately to ensure you are compliant at tax time.
Digital nomads pay their income tax in the country where they live. However, self-employed ex-pats may have to pay taxes in both countries. Since tax laws vary between countries, I will only go into some detail. For example, there’s an agreement between Italy & the United States which says that I will pay both self-employment tax in the U.S. and taxes in Italy. However, my U.S. income taxes will be reduced based on the amount I paid in Italy. I still need to file my taxes! I’ll continue to pay Social Security here in Italy, but I had the option of paying the equivalent in the United States.
The difficulty of getting either Visa depends on many factors, including the country you are in, how many applicants there are, and if there is a quota. It was said that obtaining a self-employment visa in Italy was difficult due to quotas. However, I received it without any problems. Some countries may slow down the number of visa applications they approve if there is a surge in digital nomad visas.
What is a digital nomad if you are a self-employed expat
The term is a popular one. It’s cool and sexy. When I look at the definition, a digital nomad is a twentysomething person who can live anywhere. They might choose to work in Bali for three months, then move to India, Panama, etc. This is stereotyping as digital nomads are not limited to a particular age group and don’t have to travel the world.
Self-employment is a way of identifying myself. I am in Italy to stay and want to establish my roots, personally and professionally. I am tackling the complexity of tax and accounting reporting to give back to the country I chose to call home soon.
